Exemption Policy

For the health and safety of everyone on campus, the University of California treats K-12 students including campers and interns, the same as students attending the University. Per the SARS-CoV Vaccination Policy, all campers will be required to complete the COVID vaccine program for which they are eligible, prior to attending the first day of the camp or program for which they registered. Proof of vaccination for all eligible students is required, and should be uploaded, along with other health records, into the minor’s campdoc file. In the event your camper is not eligible for vaccination, or not fully vaccinated due to age when starting camp (under 5 or recently received first vaccine), please include that information in your campdoc file by uploading a document stating that your child is not eligible to be fully vaccinated.

While we strongly encourage everyone to participate in vaccination, we recognize that there may be medical or religious reasons to defer vaccination. Exemptions are possible, and are reviewed according to procedures developed by the University of California Student Health Service.

Medical exemptions

Parents whose children are not vaccinated due to a medical contraindication or precaution may be eligible for an exemption to the vaccination requirement. Please download this medical exemption request form, complete it, have it signed by a licensed healthcare professional, and email it to the Registration Office at lhsreg@berkeley.edu for University review. It must be signed by a healthcare professional to be accepted.

Religious exemptions

If your sincerely held religious beliefs, practices or observance prohibit vaccination, please complete this religious exemption request form and email it to the Lawrence Hall of Science Registration Office at lhsreg@berkeley.edu.

We will notify you if the exemption is approved within 72 hours and the approval will be uploaded to the participant’s campdoc file.

In the event an exemption request is not approved, you will receive a refund for any camp tuition that you paid at least one week prior to the start of the session. No refund will be given if you received a scholarship/full tuition support from the Lawrence Hall of Science.

Unvaccinated campers/program participants, including those with exemptions to the vaccine requirement, will be required to present proof of a negative COVID 19 test that was administered within 72 hours of the first day of camp/teen program session, as well as proof of a second negative test result within 72 hours of the start of the second and subsequent weeks of the session (if it is a two week camp session or multi-week internship). Free COVID 19 tests are widely available at many local pharmacies and schools as well as https://www.covid.gov/tests.

We strongly encourage all parents to help participants to practice daily symptom screening, and request that participants stay home if they feel ill. In the event that a participant tests positive for COVID during the program, please notify lhsreg@berkeley.edu immediately, stay home, and do not return to the program.
