Accessibility

All of our facilities are accessible to visitors with disabilities. If there is anything we can do to make your visit easier, please let us know.

Wheelchair Access

All exhibition spaces and all public spaces and restrooms are wheelchair accessible. Restrooms are located both on our main floor (A level) and on our lower floor (C level), which you can get to by elevator. A limited number of wheelchairs are available for loan, free of charge, at the Visitor Services Desk. You will need to leave an I.D. as a deposit when borrowing a wheelchair.

Parking and Transportation

Visitors who display a handicapped plate or placard may park in one of the ten identified spaces in the Bus Circle directly in front of the plaza. A drop-off area is also located in the same location.

You can take BART, a UC Berkeley shuttle bus, or AC transit to The Lawrence. For information about bus accessibility in Berkeley and the East Bay, phone AC Transit at 5-1-1 or visit their website at actransit.org. All UC shuttle buses are wheelchair accessible.

Places to Rest

Benches are located throughout The Lawrence as well as outside: as part of the Plaza Fountain and in our Forces that Shape the Bay science park

Sensory Backpacks

We’ve just launched a pilot program to test out sensory backpacks at The Lawrence. Designed to enhance the experience of our visitors with additional sensory needs but available for everyone to borrow, these backpacks are filled with items like hearing protection, fidget toys, and a sensory guide of the building. Come check one out at the Visitors Services Desk during your next visit and let us know what you think!

"A blue Everest backpack surrounded by various sensory support items, including sanitizing wipes, a visual timer, a hedgehog stuffed animal, fidget toys in a plastic bag, noise-canceling headphones, and two pairs of sunglasses (adult and kid sizes). The text on the backpack reads, 'What’s inside? ¿Que hay dentro?' and all items are labeled in both English and Spanish."
