May 2018 marked the 50th anniversary of the Lawrence Hall of Science, established as part of UC Berkeley’s centennial celebration in 1968, and named in honor of Ernest O. Lawrence, the university’s first Nobel Laureate.
To mark this milestone, Hall visitors enjoyed a year-long celebration featuring free admission events, new exhibits and experiences, and special activities highlighting the very best of what we do. Our anniversary year culminated with a benefit event on May 9, 2019, which raised nearly $200,000 for the future of science learning at the Hall.
We extend our appreciation and gratitude to you—our visitors, Members, donors, advocates, and all others who walk through our doors and use our materials around the globe—for your 50 years of support. Thank you for celebrating with us!

The Chemical Education Material Study, better known as CHEM Study, was developed in the early 1960s at UC Berkeley’s College of Chemistry, at the Lawrence Hall of Science, and at Harvey Mudd College. The study continued at the Hall through the 1980s. The textbook was written by Glenn T. Seaborg in the early 1960s.
