Program Overview:

The Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley’s Public Science Center, offers a wide range of programs to the public, families, and school groups, serving over 170,000 visitors per year.

The Ingenuity Challenges at the Hall is a drop-in space where visitors of all ages have the opportunity to engage in fun, hands-on engineering and tinkering design activities. As visitors brainstorm ideas and design, build, test their own creations, they apply problem solving skills, creativity, and work collaboratively to solve real world challenges. In this position, students will work with other staff and volunteers to facilitate hands-on activities, prepare and maintain materials, and generate curiosity with visitors through the engineering design process by using open-ended investigations.


  • Facilitate hands-on engineering and tinkering activities with visitors of all ages
  • Assist with the development and prototyping of new hands-on learning experiences
  • Collaborate with other staff and volunteers to foster innovation and curiosity with visitors
  • Prepare and maintain materials and inventory
  • Set up space and design challenges
  • Conduct light cleaning of space
  • Ability to work in fast paced environment
  • Answer visitor questions and ensure visitor safety
  • Represent the program and Hall in a positive manner via attitude, communication, and enthusiasm
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor


  • Current UC Berkeley student
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Strong communication skills
  • Friendly, enthusiastic, and enjoys working with people
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 8 hours per week including at least one weekend day
  • Must be available to work during campus breaks including Finals Week, Thanksgiving Week, and Winter Break (strongly preferred, but not required)
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week during summer including at least one weekend day
  • Experience working with school age children
  • Ability to transport self to the Hall


  • Experience interacting with large groups of people
  • Passionate about STEM and/or Education
  • Interest in creativity, DIY art or science projects and/or making things
  • Second language
