What will it take to create a carbon-neutral future? UC Berkeley undergraduate students are invited to explore innovation transportation solutions through the Go Carbon Neutral Challenge! In partnership with the Museum of Science, Boston, this competition will have you thinking about green technology, engineering, and city planning as ways to solve transportation challenges in the Bay Area–with cash prizes available to finalists.

How it Works
Applicants will choose a transportation-related topic and propose a strategy and/or solution that addresses that topic. Topical categories may include but are not limited to: energy, fuel, infrastructure, alternative vehicles, or modes of transportation. You will have the opportunity to work with a mentor to help you shape your idea. Semi-finalists will present their ideas at a culminating (virtual!) event on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22nd.
Teams/Individuals that make it to the semi-final stage will receive cash stipends, and finalists and prize winners will all receive cash prizes for their ideas! For competitors at any stage, the Challenge is a great opportunity to add to your design portfolio, add something to your resume, and make connections with mentors. Background on Transportation in the Bay Area
In 2019, San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors unanimously declared a climate emergency. In response, the City and County of San Francisco is in the process of updating its Climate Action Plan, focused on achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The 2021 Plan will expand on the ambitious goals of its predecessor by creating the 0-80-100-Roots framework. This guides action to reach zero waste, 80% sustainable trips, 100% renewable energy, and green infrastructure projects.
The recently released San Francisco Transportation Sector Climate Action Strategy has set a goal of increasing transit ridership by expanding safe, reliable, accessible, equitable, rapid, and environmentally sustainable transit service by 2025. Currently the transportation sector contributes roughly 46% of San Francisco’s overall emissions. Challenge participants will be tasked with creating a strategy to reduce the greenhouse gases produced by San Francisco’s transportation systems. Transportation categories may include but are not limited to energy, fuel, infrastructure, alternative vehicles, or modes of transportation.
