Engineering and Building Bridges

Are you ready to take your design and engineering skills to the next level? In this program, you will learn about various types of bridges, including truss bridges like the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge and suspension bridges like the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge. Together we will face engineering challenges, explore some physics fundamentals, and learn how to analyze static and dynamic forces. During the program you will “play” lead engineer to design, build, and test bridges that can support human needs and withstand natural forces. You will learn basic bridge types and gain fundamentals of bridge engineering and construction.

Body System and Biomedical Innovations

Are you interested in biomedical innovations such as gene editing that can help people with chronic diseases, disabilities, or prosthetic limbs? In this program, you will deepen your knowledge of body systems, investigate how some of these systems may break down, and explore how scientists and engineers are working to solve these problems. Together we will use actual diagnostic techniques to solve medical-malady mysteries for fictitious patients. During the program you will dissect a simulated heart, utilize our Planetarium to imagine stepping inside a blood vessel and a cell, and interview practicing doctors to learn more about what they do and how they do it. You will gain some knowledge of CRISPR, a current gene-editing technology, as well as acquire skills for designing and prototyping a prosthetic hand.

Coding for Space Exploration

Have you ever wondered how scientists on Earth use coding and engineering to discover the secrets of faraway places in space? In this program, you will explore computer coding for real-life applications. Together we will face engineering challenges as we learn block-based coding. During the program you will build a model satellite, rover, or probe, and will even code it to function on a variety of space missions. You will become familiar with the iterative design process, and will deepen your knowledge of both our Solar System and computer programming. *No coding experience required.
