Moons of the Solar System

Grades:
grade 3
-
grade 5
Earth and Space Science
Workshop

In our Planetarium, students observe the changing Moon and find out what causes its phases, by acting out the motions of Earth and its Moon in the light of a simulated Sun. They monitor and record the behavior of Jupiter’s four moons, and take a tour of some of the dozens of moons in our Solar System.

Topics:
Disciplinary Core Ideas: ESS1.B Earth and the Solar System

grade 12
Engineering
Physical Science
Workshop

Students are introduced to engineering, circuitry, and motion as they go through iterative prototyping to design, build, and test LEGO artbots. They observe and compare how their motorized contraptions perform and discuss their design process.

Patterns: Earth Sun and Moon

Grades:
grade 1
-
grade 2
Earth and Space Science
Workshop

The Sun comes up every day, but what makes one day different from the next? And are the Moon and the stars the same every night? In this Planetarium program, students will discover the answers to these questions as they make observations and predictions to consider explanations for the patterns in our sky.

Engineering Challenge: Linkage Lab

Grades:
grade 3
-
grade 12
Engineering
Physical Science
Workshop

Students are introduced to engineering concepts as they explore the roles of force and motion in designing moving mechanisms. Using two-dimensional mechanical linkages, they create mechanisms with various inputs and outputs that move in distinct ways.

*Offered December–January.

Animal Homes

Grades:
age 3
-
grade K
Life Science
Workshop

Meet and hold animals that live in various types of habitats, from the trees above us to the tunnels below us! Students will investigate the relationship between animals’ needs and their environment. Through close-up observations, students identify how animals find food and water.
