Bay View Cafe Spotlight: Starter Bakery

November 9, 2016

When the Hall reopened in September, we launched our new Bay View Cafe featuring grab-and-go snacks, salads, and sandwiches. The Bay View Cafe also serves fresh coffee, pastries, and other products from local vendors in the Bay Area.

Every day, fresh pastries are delivered to the Bay View Cafe. The cookies, croissants, and more are made by local favorite Starter Bakery. Located in Oakland, Starter Bakery is a venture from pastry chef Brian Wood. Brian’s experience with developing recipes and writing cookbooks shows in the quality of the pastries offered by Starter.

Starter works primarily with restaurants and cafes, though they have provided pastries for special school events in the area. When the Bay View Cafe approached Starter Bakery, they scheduled a tasting with our staff to determine which products would appeal most to our customers.

Starter’s top-seller—and a favorite of staff and visitors at the Hall—is the Kouign Amann. The Kouign Amann is a traditional French pastry similar to a croissant. It is made by rolling out and folding together layers of dough with salt, butter, and sugar, resulting in a flaky sweet pastry that is denser than a croissant.

We invite you to try a fresh Kouign Amann, or any of the fantastic pastries and other products we serve at the Bay View Cafe!
