Public Engagement Executive Leader

The Lawrence Hall of Science (The Lawrence) seeks an experienced and innovative executive leader who specializes in the leadership and management of the business of running a science center and/or other community/cultural attractions. This position will provide visionary leadership for The Lawrence’s public science center visitor experience, outreach programs, and audience development and be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Lawrence Hall of Science’s on site and off site public programs that are designed to advance our mission across Bay Area communities. The incumbent in this position will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operations, relevance and sustainability of our onsite and offsite public programs. 

Responsibilities

  • Provides visionary leadership for The Lawrence’s public science center visitor experience, outreach programs, and audience development
  • Manages, plans and administers general operations of the public programs of the Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley’s public science center.
  • Oversees Lawrence activities at and in partnership with community, other UC, and/or external universities.    
  • Serves as a member of the Lawrence Hall of Science’s Executive Leadership Team, leading the implementation of our strategic plans and ensuring ongoing fiscal health.    
  • Serves as key administrative officer for unit’s functional programs, oversees analysis and policy development for issues and processes related to science center operations.
  • Develops, modifies, and executes organization policies which affect immediate operation(s).    
  • Makes decisions on administrative or operational matters and ensures achievement of objectives (operational and budget processes, academic and / or staff FTE, finance, human resources, IT and space planning) that have department-wide impact.    
  • Interacts with higher-level management on controversial situations, customer negotiations, and / or influencing and persuading others. Formulates policies and guidelines to carry out the department’s mission.    
  • Maintains integrity of an organizational department through management and oversight of staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent ability to establish metrics for department and employee goals related to business objectives and targets.    
  • Expertise in program and/or business management in the field of science and technology centers.    
  • Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques.    
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively lead, motivate and influence others, to participate as a supportive and productive member of an executive team, and to develop and maintain high standards of customer service.    
  • Excellent project management skills, including the capability of managing capital projects.    
  • Very strong ability to quickly evaluate complex issues, consider creative approaches, and identify multiple options for resolution.    
  • Experience in business operations including managing people and fiscal resources.    
  • Experience in business development including identifying revenue-generating opportunities, analyzing data to support smart financial decisions, and monitoring the fiscal health of revenue-generating initiatives.
