Equity Committee Guiding Principles

Our Vision

Lawrence Hall of Science staff will welcome, plan for, and employ people of all races, ethnicity, language backgrounds, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic levels, ages, and abilities.

Our Goal

Our goal is to work proactively to create a more welcoming culture at Lawrence Hall of Science and to engage all of our colleagues in this ongoing effort.

What are the objectives of the equity committee?

  • To assess areas of the Hall where inequity exists.
  • To reach audiences historically underserved by LHS.
  • To enhance our ability to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse population.
  • To make apparent the set of policies and procedures that will empower staff to take action against forms of bias or inequity.
  • To assemble current resources available to LHS staff to help them address issues related to equity.
  • To influence and assist departments to incorporate equity into their program development, practices, and audiences served.
  • To monitor and evaluate the progress of the committee toward addressing equity and diversity issues at LHS.

Anticipated outcomes of the equity committee

  • We attract and retain a highly qualified, diverse staff.
  • Exhibits, programs and print materials reflect, welcome, celebrate, and benefit from the diverse communities currently and potentially served by LHS.
  • We work in partnership with diverse constituents (visitors, funders, schools, community-based organizations, etc.) to identify ways to meet their needs.
  • We engage in dialogues and workshops that examine issues of diversity and equity.
  • Feedback from our efforts indicates a positive change in our constituents’ feelings about equity.

History

Since its inception, the Lawrence Hall of Science Equity Committee has addressed a wide range of equity issues, including recruiting a diverse staff, designing programs for and inviting a more diverse audience. Nevertheless, there is still a significant disparity between the diversity of our communities and the people who work and set policies in our science center, and so we commit to a sustained equity effort.
