Kimi Hosoume is the Associate Director of the Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS) Program of the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California at Berkeley. GEMS produces a series of inquiry-based mathematics and science materials used in elementary and middle school classrooms around the world. For over 20 years, Hosoume has directed many national and international projects involving professional development and curriculum development for preschool through eighth grade classroom teachers. She has launched two international GEMS sites, one in Istanbul, Turkey and, more recently, one in Tokyo, Japan with the Japan Environmental Education Forum. Currently, she directs the PEACHES early childhood educators program and the GEMS Science Kit program, which designs fun and educational activities for the home market. Hosoume has a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, and an Elementary Teaching Credential and a Secondary Science Teaching Credential from the University of California at Berkeley. In the past, she has directed state and federally funded projects involving teacher enhancement, early childhood education, and GEMS effectiveness research. She has co-authored a number of GEMS and PEACHES guides including the popular Terrarium Habitats. Hosoume has served as guest speaker for a Hawaii Association of Independent School conference, and as an invited panelist for an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting on science education. |
