Catherine Halversen is Co-Director and the principal curriculum developer/author as well as co-founder for MARE: Marine Activities, Resources & Education at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley. MARE is a K¿8 interdisciplinary marine science curriculum and professional development program focusing specifically on implementing schoolwide science programs that increase learning and language acquisition opportunities for English-language learners. Over 500 schools are currently using the MARE curriculum and program across the country. Halversen has directed and presented many professional development institutes and workshops. She served as the project coordinator of Science Knowledge through Inquiry & Language Literacy, which focused on using exemplary, inquiry-based science instruction to promote language literacy throughout a large, urban school district. Halversen has co-authored three Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS) teacher guides at LHS, including On Sandy Shores, Only One Ocean, and Ocean Currents. She is a former high school science teacher with credentials in Life Science and Chemistry and received a Master's of Science degree, all from UC Berkeley. |
