Lynn Barakos

Lynn Barakos is a professional development specialist working in Custom Professional Development, Bay Area Science Project (BASP), Science Knowledge through Inquiry and Language Literacy (SKILL), and Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS) programs at the Lawrence Hall of Science. She joined the Chemistry Education department at LHS when her career in cancer research left her craving an experience teaching children about the workings of science. She has since taught and designed chemistry programs for children from preschool to high school, developed and presented extensive teacher education programs in science and inquiry, and consulted with teachers and districts about standards-based, science education reform.  She has also participated in the GEMS Leaders and Associates network expansion, leading workshops both nationally and internationally. Barakos has been a strong proponent for working with parents to achieve student success in science, and has co-authored and presented workshops for the GEMS Parent Partners handbook. Her current focus is on long-term work with teachers exploring how science can support their literacy programs, as well as developing and facilitating inquiry experiences for summer research institutes with teachers. Barakos has a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from the University of California at Berkeley and a secondary single-subject credential in Life Sciences from St. Mary's College.
