How Parents Make a Difference

Research shows that the best predictors of a student's achievement in school are not income or social status, but rather:

  • a home environment that encourages learning
  • realistic but high expectations by parents and caregivers for their children's achievement and future careers
  • involvement of parents/caregivers in children's education at school and in the community.

When one or more of these three conditions are in place, these are the results:

  • Higher grades and test scores
  • Better attendance and more completed homework
  • Fewer placements in special education
  • More positive attitudes and behavior
  • Higher graduation rates
  • Greater enrollment in higher education
