Multiple Intelligences: an Inventory for Adults

To help you gain insight into your child's learning style, this quick inventory can help you assess your own learning strengths and weaknesses.

Check the statements that apply in each category:

Linguistic Intelligence

____ Books are very important to me.

____ I enjoy word games like Scrabble®, Anagrams®, or Password®.

____ I enjoy writing.

____ I appreciate tongue twisters, nonsense rhymes, and puns.

____ I like to tell stories and jokes.

____ I'm a good speller.

Logical-Mathematical Intelligence

____ I can quickly compute numbers in my head.

____ Math and/or science were enjoyable subjects in school.

____ I enjoy playing strategy games and solving logic puzzles and brain-teasers.

____ I think on a more abstract or conceptual level than some people.

____ My mind searches for patterns, regularities, and logical sequences.

____ I believe that almost everything has a logical explanation.

Spatial Intelligence

____ I can see clear visual pictures when I imagine things.

____ I enjoy doing jigsaw puzzles, mazes, and other visual puzzles.

____ I can generally find my way around unfamiliar territory.

____ I like to draw or doodle.

____ In school, geometry was easier for me than algebra.

____ I prefer reading text that is illustrated with maps, charts, and diagrams.

Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence

____ I engage in at least one physical activity or sport on a regular basis.

____ I frequently use hand gestures or other forms of body language when conversing with someone.

____ I like to touch things in order to learn about them.

____ My best ideas come to me when I'm out for a long walk or engaging in some other physical activity.

____ I like working with my hands (sewing, needlepoint, carving, carpentry, model building).

____ I prefer actually practicing a new skill rather than reading about it or seeing a video describing the activity.

Musical Intelligence

____ I can tell when a musical note is off key.

____ I have a pleasant singing voice.

____ I often make tapping sounds or hum little melodies.

____ I play a musical instrument.

____ I remember melodies of songs.

____ I respond favorably to music.

Interpersonal Intelligence

____ I have at least three close friends.

____ When I have a problem, I'm more likely to seek out another person to talk to about it than to work it out on my own.

____ I enjoy socializing.

____ I'm the sort of person people come to for advice.

____ I enjoy the challenge of teaching another person (or groups of people) what I know how

to do.

____ I have natural leadership qualities.

Intrapersonal Intelligence

____ I regularly spend time alone meditating, reflecting, or thinking about important life questions.

____ I have a special hobby or interest that I keep pretty much to myself.

____ I have a realistic view of my strengths and weaknesses.

____ I'm aware of my feelings.

____ I'm fairly self-directed.

____ I'm confident and comfortable being different from others in a group.
