FAMILY MATH

FAMILY MATH, one of the EQUALS programs out of the Lawrence Hall of Science, is designed to promote math equity and access to all students, regardless of race, gender, or class. The goal of the program is to promote parents as effective partners in helping their children succeed in mathematics. It focuses entirely on diverse families learning mathematics together, using inexpensive materials and hands-on, problem-solving activities. Children and adults come together once a week for several weeks, doing most activities in small groups with two or three families working together. Best of all, they put into practice at home the ideas they've developed in class. FAMILY MATH activities illustrate concepts that reinforce the school math curriculum and demonstrate the importance of mathematics to future work and education.

FAMILY MATH transforms student attitudes toward mathematics, gives parents a sense of confidence, re-energizes teachers, and builds community. For more information on setting up or participating in a program, or to obtain FAMILY MATH publications, please communicate with:

Family Science

Family Science is an informal science education program that gives parents and children opportunities to work and learn science together. The family-education component of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Partnership for Inquiry-Based Science (PIBS), Family Science teaches hands-on activities that use easy-to-find, inexpensive materials to encourage families to explore concepts and see the role science plays in daily life. The Lawrence Hall of Science was one of the original Family Science sites, and leadership training workshops can be arranged through the EQUALS program. For information about introducing the program in your child's school, see http://chroma.mbt.washington.edu/outreach/fam_sci.html

MARINE SCIENCE FIELD TRIPS
Marine Activities, Resources & Education (MARE)

The MARE program at LHS has created field-trip resources for teachers that are packed with advice and organizational tips easily adaptable by parents. Each guide is a terrific introduction to planning simple interpretive field trips with your children. They start with a primer on how to interact with nature, with solid suggestions on how to use all our senses, encourage inquiry, make careful observations, and be good stewards of the natural places we visit. The guides include checklists for organizing a field trip, suggestions for equipment to take along, and a nice description of how to make your trip educationally meaningful by planning conceptual goals for each trip. Especially helpful, the guides include sample activities to focus and inspire your child along the way, no matter what your objectives for the field trips. Guides are available for kelp forests, sandy beaches, rocky seashores, and field-trip sites in Central California. Each kind of site is described in detail, and suggestions can be adapted to other locations.
