Checklist for Field Trip

Field-trip tips from the Marine Activities, Resources & Education (MARE) Program at the Lawrence Hall of Science.

1. Select the field-trip site you want to visit.

  • Who owns it?
  • Be sure to get permission to enter.
  • Do you need to make reservations?
  • Is it accessible?
  • Is there transportation at the site?
  • Parking?
  • Are there bathrooms?

2. Select the date and time.

  • Call for reservations.
  • Are there any conflicts, such as major events going on nearby, or other groups with prior reservations?

3. Determine expenses and timeline.

4. Decide how many children will go on the trip.

  • Base your decision on the size of the site, and the capacity of carpools or the bus.
  • Decide how many parents/adults you will need.

5. Schedule transportation.

  • Arrange a carpool, charter a bus, or find out the schedule for public transit.

6. Send trip information to parents.

7. Obtain any field trip equipment you need.

8. Develop detailed logistics and a schedule for the day's activities.

  • Assign each child a buddy for the trip.
  • Prepare name tags for the students. (These are helpful for naturalist guides and parent/adult volunteers).

9. Review the trip logistics

  • Go over expectations and safety rules with children before leaving.
