State Parent/School Partnerships

A number of state agencies and offices are actively integrating parent involvement into their educational policies. Here are just a few examples of regional parent/school programs initiated by state agencies. Does your state sponsor this kind of parent/school teamwork?

The Connecticut State Department of Education co-created the "School-Family-Community Partnerships Project" to provide training, workshops, a newsletter, and a collection of resources.

Montana's Center for Community Education piloted "Even Start," a project that emphasizes parents' involvement as communicators, supporters, learners, teachers, advisors, and advocates.

The California State Board of Education's "Parent Involvement Policy" helps schools and school districts develop strong, comprehensive parent-involvement policies at all grade levels and in a variety of roles.

West Virginia's "Total Village Project" supports parent/community/school communication with parent-teacher action teams, mentoring, tutoring, and other assistance.

In Louisiana and other states, all Title 1 schools (which receive extra educational services for children who risk failing to meet state academic standards because of poverty or other social circumstance) make written "compacts" with parents as part of a state-mandated parent-involvement policy.

The Colorado Department of Education opens its Web site with just one motto: "Students-Parents-Teachers."
