LAWRENCE HALL OF SCIENCE INSPIRES SUPPORT FOR SCIENCE LEARNING
Lawrence Hall of Science Director, Elizabeth Stage,
Shares Science Learning for All: Shaping Our Future by Investing In People
Business leaders from companies around the Bay Area will be gathering for a reception and presentation focused on the critical nature of science education today...and how it’s shaping our country’s future economic viability. In a world where four out of five future careers require an understanding of science and technology, it’s astonishing that in the Bay Area, the average child receives less than one hour per week of science education. And considering the curriculum is often based on late 19th century educational models, cultivating a forward-moving economy and sustainable future is dramatically off-course.
“To generate break-through solutions for business, technology and the environment, we have to inspire and educate tomorrow’s scientists and engineers. That alone isn’t sufficient. In addition to a tech-savvy workforce, we also need to increase science literacy for everyone” said Elizabeth Stage, director of the Lawrence Hall of Science. “The best policies options are worthless if voters don't understand the evidence that supports sustainable decisions. The Hall is committed to improving this situation and is looking for partners who understand the importance of making an investment in science and math learning for all."
Working with national and international organizations, the Lawrence Hall of Science is consistently introducing new and impactful programs that seek to dramatically improve science education in and out of school. But state funding cuts have put pressure on organizations that depend on public funds, increasing the need for support from forward-thinking companies. The Lawrence Hall of Science is reaching out to Bay Area corporations to find partners who understand the importance of making an investment in science and math learning for all. LHS recently received a $1 million Oracle Commitment grant. The Oracle grant supports the continued development of an after-school science program based on proven LHS curricula and professional development programs that are being adapted for out-of-school programs, including the Boys and Girls Clubs, Scouts and recreation and camp programs, as well as after-school programs in public schools.
The first four AfterSchool KidzScience kits will focus on physical science and will be available this month. More kits, including Green Science and Life Science kits, will follow.
These are just a few of the many programs the Lawrence Hall of Science has developed to bring quality science and math learning opportunities to homes, communities and schools. The organizers of this event share the belief that more and better science and technology learning is key to developing the innovation, workforce, and engaged and informed citizenry that our future requires.
