MARE Summer Leadership Institute

MARE Summer Leadership Institute participants explore the ocean

This Institute will showcase new instructional materials and approaches that address state and national science education standards as well as the Ocean Literacy Essential Principles and Fundamental Concepts.  Daily instruction includes a fascinating array of ocean sciences content, field trips and hands-on investigations from the MARE Curriculum and the new, NOAA-funded Ocean Sciences Curriculum Sequence for Grades 3-5.  Participants will gain skills to help their school/district improve its overall science instruction, and to coordinate the implementation of the MARE Program. The Institute is intended for classroom teachers, science resource teachers, literacy specialists, bilingual teachers, informal educators, curriculum leaders, professional developers, and school administrators.

Language arts and science instruction are more than complementary, they are synergistic. When strategically integrated, students improve reading comprehension and mastery of academic language and gain deeper conceptual understanding. This Institute will showcase new instructional materials and approaches, including those funded by NOAA to address the Ocean Literacy Principles and Fundamental Concepts. The MARE program at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley, has pioneered the strategic integration of reading, discourse, and inquiry-based ocean sciences instruction.

Join us for this exciting opportunity to participate in classroom and field experiences, as we focus on meaningful connections between inquiry science and literacy. Daily instruction includes a fascinating array of ocean sciences content, field trips, and hands-on activities from the MARE and NOAA-funded Ocean Sciences Sequence for grades 3-5 curricula.

Participants will gain skills to help their school or district improve its overall science curriculum and instruction. They will deepen their understanding of inquiry-based science pedagogy, leading effective field experiences for students, and building comprehension and science content through reading and addressing the needs of English learners.

Please contact Sarah Pedemonte at 510-642-5008 or e-mail spedemonte@berkeley.edu for information on tailoring the Institute for your school or district, or other professional development opportunities.
