MARE E-mail Lists
Imagine a group of people who’d like to be able to share their good ideas about MARE and Ocean Immersion events any time of the year. E-mailing lists or list-servs were invented so your e-mails can be about the good stuff, not about maintaining each other's contact information.
One computer keeps track of the members of the e-mail list. Using just one e-mail address, any member of the list can send a message to all members of the list. Each member can update their e-mail address in one place. New people can join the conversation. Other members of the list don’t need to do anything to take advantage of these changes.
Available E-mail Lists
Teacher and parent attendees of the MARE Summer Leadership Institute and other members of your institutions leadership teams or administrators at your schools are invited to join the MARE Leadership E-mail list : mareleadership.
There is also an e-mail list for each Habitat taught in the MARE Teachers’ Guides. Each teacher or other staff from schools using the Ocean Immersion week or month model is invited to join lists they find relevant. The Habitat e-mail lists are:
- mareponds
- marerockyseashore
- maresandybeach
- marewetlands
- marekelpforest
- mareopenocean
- mareislands
- marecoralreefs
- marepolarseas
Subscribe to these lists on each Habitat Homepage or below.
E-mail List Ettiquette
The e-mail lists are intended as a tool for members of the MARE communities to network, share ideas, and find support. Please follow a few guidelines to maintain the usefulness of these lists.
- Don't send attachments to the list. To share a file, send a message describing it and offering to forward it to anyone who contacts you directly.
- Don't send advertisements or other commercial messages on the list.
Subscribing to a List
Subscribe to a habitat e-mail list using the button on the Habitat Homepage. You should receive a welcome e-mail asking to confirm your subscription.
If you do not respond to this message, you won’t see any future e-mails.
Junk mail filters may stop you from getting the confirmation message. Check your junk mailbox, adjust your filters or junk mail settings, or check with your e-mail provider.
After you confirm, you'll recieve a welcome message. This tells how to send messages to the list, how to get help, and how to unsubscribe.
Sending a Message - Sharing on the List
To send messages to the e-mail list, address the e-mail to the name of the list at sv3.berkeley.edu. The message should look like:
To: listname@sv3.berkeley.edu
Subject: whatever you want
Message: What you want to share
For example, if you were subscribed to the MARE Kelp Forest Habitat E-mail list, and wished to share a great new website you found, send a message like:
To: marekelpforest@sv3.berkeley.edu
Subject: Great Kelp Forest website
Message: There are lots of great Kelp Forest teaching resources available from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, http://www.mbayaq.org/. Check it out!
Replying to Messages
By default, replying to a message you receive from the e-mail list will go only to the person who first sent the message. To reply and share the message with the e-mail list, use Reply All, or change the address of the e-mail to the list's address.
If Your E-mail Address Changes...
Your subscription is based on your e-mail address. If you change your e-mail address, you may continue to receive forwarded messages. However, if you try to send a message to the list from your new address, you won’t be recognized as a subscriber.
- Using your old e-mail address, unsubscribe. If that isn’t possible, contact the list-owner for assistance. If you skip this step, you will start to receive two copies of each message.
- From your new e-mail address, subscribe to the list again.
Unsubscribing
Follow the link at the bottom of any message you're received from the list, or use this form:
Help!
Check the footer of each e-mail you receive from the list, or your welcome message, for information about getting help with an e-mail list. The "list owner" is a real person from the MARE staff reading your e-mail.
If nothing else works, please don't fret – contact MARE (510) 642-5008 PST and we'll do our best to help you.
