PROMOTING ORGINIAL RESEARCH IN THE SCIENCES, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS
JSHS is a three-day event, which is held annually on a university campus, provides high school students the opportunity to:
- Hear nationally renowned scientists speak on their work
- Visit university, corporate and government research facilities
- Meet informally with university students and research scientists
- Talk with peers who have the same interests
- Hear research presentations by other students
There are two components to the
Symposium: 
- All students participate in all symposium activities
- Students who wish to present their research will do so to an audience of high school students and teachers, and a panel of judges. Winners will receive regional and national scholarships and attend the National Jr. Science and Humanity Symposium. The 2013 National Symposium is planned to be held May 1-5, hosted by the Air Force at Dayton Ohio, home of Wright Patterson Air Force Base and HQS Air Force Research Laboratory.

The Northern California Western Nevada Junior Science and Humanities Symposium is a program of the San Francisco Bay Area Science Fair, Inc. and is co-sponsored by:
- The research offices of the Army, Navy, and Air Force through contract with the Academy of Applied Science (National Jr. Science and Humanities Symposium)
