Math Around the World

Travel the worldthe world of mathematics! Enjoy the games played 'round the world and across the centuries at Math Around the World, a new LHS exhibition that presents math with a multicultural perspective.

Try these games online right now:
Shongo Networks
The Tower of Hanoi

These fun games have survived and thrived, relying on mathematical concepts that have challenged and entertained kids and adults for centuries.

Math Around the World features:

  • Hex, named for its hexagonal game board first introduced in Denmark.
  • Magic Squares, a Chinese number puzzle at least 4,000 years old.
  • Kalah, the oldest known continuously played game in history. A Kalah board was found carved into the stone pyramid of Cheops in Egypt.
  • Shongo Networks, a game with intriguing patterns, from the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) in Africa.
  • Game Sticks, from Native Americans.
  • Games of Alignment from the United States, Europe, and Africa that will sharpen your logic skills and take off where tic-tac-toe ends!
Math Around the World proves that some things never change: A good game is one you want to play over and over and over. And, the more you play, the better you get!
