Center for Research, Evaluation, and Assessment

The Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley, established the Center for Research, Evaluation, and Assessment (REA) in 2003 in response to the need for evidence-based educational materials, practice, and policy. We seek to support high quality science and mathematics learning opportunities for all by providing information and insight that support design, development, and decision-making. REA contributes to excellence, equity, and innovation in science and mathematics education by: conducting applied research, evaluating the quality and impact of educational materials and programs, and developing assessments that measure knowledge and learning in science and mathematics.

REA Center studies and projects draw on existing research and utilize validated measurement tools as well as create new and innovative ways of measuring impact. We do our work in and across multiple settings including formal (in schools, districts, etc.), out-of school (afterschool, camps, communities), and informal (science centers, media, home).

Center team members have diverse backgrounds, professional experiences, knowledge, and skills.

Curriculum

  • Diversity of Life
The FOSS (Full Option Science System) Diversity of Life course introduces students to the big picture of life on Earth, helping them to discover that all living things, despite their complexity, share the same basic characteristics. Diversity of Life is one of nine courses in the FOSS Middle School Program.
  • Investigating Wastewater: Solutions and Pollution
Investigating Wastewater: Solutions and Pollution teaches solution chemistry in the context of issues related to water pollution. This program is one of 12 issue-oriented science modules produced by SEPUP.
