California Mathematics and Science Teacher Program (CMST)

The California Mathematics and Science Teacher (CMST) Program at UC Berkeley is a collaboration among the Department of Mathematics, the Graduate School of Education, Cal Teach, and the Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS). Community college transfers, and other juniors and seniors at UC Berkeley are invited to participate.  The CMST program will:

  • Expand the development of science and mathematics teachers at UC Berkeley
  • Help increase the quality of science and mathematics teachers entering California’s middle and high schools
  • Contribute to putting 1,000 science and mathematics teachers each year into California classrooms by 2010

By becoming a part of the CMST Program, you will be able to meet other students interested in mathematical sciences and teaching careers and participate in education-oriented workshops and career mentoring events, and enroll in mathematics and science courses that will help you meet the credential requirements.  These courses include

  • Mathematics of the Secondary School
  • Introduction to Enviromental Education – Enviromental Science, Policy and Management
  • Teaching Statistics: Demos, Activities and Projects
  • Communicating Ocean Science
  • Communicating Science

CMST will also give you the opportunity to acquire first-hand teaching experience in local middle schools and high schools and later apply for internships. Select CMST candidates will receive paid stipends.  Stipends are limited and are based on completed applications, an interview. (See application information below.)

If you are interested in the CMST Program, please download the application. Send us your completed application and essay via fax: (510) 642-9642 or e-mail: access_math@berkeley.edu
