Get up close to hundreds of wild mushrooms at the 40th annual Fungus Fair, being held this year at the Lawrence Hall of Science. Our hallways and classrooms will be filled with wild-mushroom displays. Eat edible mushrooms, meet vendors displaying everything from cultivation kits to T-shirts, and watch culinary demonstrations by mushroom chefs. Get the dirt on poisonous mushrooms and check out other wild fungi, from the wonderfully medicinal to the really, really strange.
Mushroom experts will be on hand to answer all your questions and to identify unknown specimens brought in by visitors—BYOM (Bring Your Own Mushroom). Mycologists (mushroom scientists) will present slide shows and talk about foraging for mushrooms. Find out how different mushrooms can be used for treating diseases, dyeing cloth or paper, and flavoring foods. From lectures to microscopes to dining, there’s something for everyone at the Fungus Fair.
Come to the Family Fungus Room: a space set up specifically for kids to explore the wild world of mushrooms!
Presented by the Lawrence Hall of Science and the Mycological Society of San Francisco (MSSF). See the program of lectures and events to be posted soon.
Fungus Fair activities are included with museum admission.

What if you could travel to Mars? Would you be prepared for a long space journey and an inhospitable landscape? What will you eat on your three-year journey? What will happen to your body in microgravity? How will you get along living with the rest of the crew? Can you protect yourself from radiation and Martian dust storms? If Mars has any signs of life, could you recognize them?
In Facing Mars, your readiness to be a space traveler will be tested in over two dozen simulations of space travel.
Take the Challenges
* Design and test your own rocket
* Get dizzy in a spinning chair
* Build a maze for a Mars robotic rover
* Walk in simulated Martian gravity
Going to Mars will take ingenuity, teamwork, and imagination. Come to think of it, so does living right here on Earth! Challenge yourself in the Facing Mars exhibit and see if you’ve got the right stuff.
Facing Mars was designed and built by the Ontario Science Centre, Ontario, Canada.
Explore the skies in our interactive planetarium, where questions and activities are part of the show!
A Sky Full of Stars: What's that in the sky? We use our friendly planetarium as a time machine to speed through a day—sunrise to sunset—observing the sky and seeing how the Sun’s position changes throughout the day. Once night falls, the audience can stargaze at the Big Dipper, and imagine pictures in the stars. What can you see in a sky full of stars? (Recommended for ages 4-8, with adult)
Programs are approximately 40 minutes, and are presented live with activities. Questions are encouraged!
Please note the age restrictions for each program. Children under 6 will not be admitted, except for programs listed for ages 4-8.
