AccessMath

Alliance for Collaborative Change in School Systems

Program Goals
ACCESS Mathematics has as its primary goal the increased participation in higher education of urban school students, with particular focus on helping historically underrepresented students for admission to four-year colleges and for successful careers.

Our mission is to bring innovative professional development to San Francisco Bay Area schools, mathematics teachers working with underachieving students.

Partnerships
ACCESS Mathematics has formed dynamic partnerships to assist mathematics teachers in selected schools (grades K-12) in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Currently, we are working together with teachers in the San Francisco and West Contra Costa unified school districts to help students develop the motivation, mathematical knowledge, and problem-solving skills they need in order to succeed.

New Professional Development Program

  • The Bridging Professional Development LHS/ACCESS, in collaboration with SRI International, Menlo Park is providing a three-year professional development and research project, funded by the National Science Foundation. The project’s focus is sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade mathematics teachers; and offers teachers specific methods for applying newly-learned mathematics content to their classroom pedagogy, bridging a gap between knowing and doing.
  • The California Mathematics and Science Partnership Project (CaMSP) LHS is working in partnership with the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) on a three-year Mathematics and Science Partnership Project funded through the California Department of Education. The project works with a cohort group of 95 teachers, and provides high-quality science and mathematics professional development activities, including science at grades four and five, and mathematics at grade five through Algebra 1. LHS offers summer institutes and academic-year follow up, including workshops, coaching, and lesson-planning support to teachers. The project goals are:
    • Strengthen the quality and rigor of the district’s science and mathematics programs
    • Help to ensure that all students have access to, and can succeed in, challenging science and mathematics course work.
  • Advanced Placement Incentive Program (APIP) Since spring 2007, ACCESS has worked in partnership with the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) on its U.S. Department of Education's APIP grant to provide high-quality professional development in mathematics for teachers across the district, site-based coaching for teachers, and instructional and mentoring support in mathematics to students at targeted project schools. In 2007-08, ACCESS will continue to:
    • Strengthen teachers' mathematics content knowledge.
    • Increase the use of research-based classroom practices that foster the achievement for low-income students and English Language Learners, in particular African American students.
    • Enhance the vertical teams coordination efforts of the college preparatory mathematics program at the seven APIP project schools.
    • Facilitate vertical teams' training and coordination of the pre-AP and AP mathematics curricula at selected project schools.

Other UC Berkeley Projects at LHS:
The UC Berkeley California Mathematics and Science Teacher (CMST) Program The Lawrence Hall of Science, in partnership with UC Berkeley's Cal Teach, the Department of Mathematics, and the Graduate School of Education will cultivate future high-quality mathematics teacher by offering special seminars and field experiences for selected undergraduate students.
